The Font Love Triangle: Foundry, Reseller, Going it Alone
Wednesday, July 23 4:10 pm by Simon Daniels

Web Fonts Panel Follow Up
Tuesday, July 22 10:31 am by Simon Daniels
For the first half Adam did a great non-partisan account of the history and various technologies associated with fonts on the Web. It was very clear and concise.
Bill Davis (Ascender) announced fontembedding.com – education around embedding issues, and a possible EOT (Embedded OpenType) business model. How do you charge for EOTs - per hit, web site size? I suggested that thousands of bloggers would be willing to pay $5 to use an embedded version of Gotham (or maybe Optima) on their blogs - the “make EOT” feature on fontembedding.com looks promising as the basis of licensing EOTs.
Ted Harrison (FontLab) announced www.eeulaa.org – latest incarnation of the electronic EULA effort. Christopher Slye voiced concerns around the legal implications. I said that I doubted it would get into OpenType due to these concerns, but another option for supporters of the technology would be to bypass MS and Adobe and take the fight to ISO (not trivial).

To Catch A Thief
Sunday, July 20 5:39 pm by Simon Daniels
The TypeCrit poster, hand drawn by John Downer, and sheduled to be given to industry veteran Mike Parker as a special gift went missing last night. Calls for a no-questions-asked return have gone un-heeded.
John Downer writes... “I am offering a REWARD for info leading to the return of the sign (which was to be a gift to Mike Parker). The reward is not monetary, it is a personalized, custom sign made by me for the person who snitches on the thief.”

Murder, he spoke
Saturday, July 19 4:22 pm by Simon Daniels
Mike Parker presented newly unearthed evidence in his on-going quest to credit the design of Times to American daredevil Starling Burgess. Those expecting a smoking gun were disappointed. The gun was never discovered. More back-story on the Typophile wiki (hopefully to be soon updated with the new info). However, Mike did produce a type specimen for a new Font Bureau version of Times dubbed Starling.

NLXL
Thursday, July 17 10:26 pm by Simon Daniels
TypeCon 2008 proper kicked off with an opening night adventure with Dutch design greats NLXL - the trio is on the hunt for “donated” fonts, so far they can afford only one. It kept me on the edge of my seat for a full two hours. An evening of multiple stimuli - sight and sound, taste and touch. This exciting event took place at the cool campus of TypeCon partner, the University at Buffalo, home to an exceptional design program full of students and faculty in love with type.

Hotel Network News
Monday, July 14 9:28 pm by Simon Daniels
Kent Lew kindly forward some details on the internet access provided by the Hyatt. As always, the organizers have fearlessly negotiated on behalf of TypeCon hotel guests to get internet access included for free. On check-in you should get a nice letter from the hotel outlining the details. It's free wifi in the lobby with your special SOTA password. Hyatt hotel guests have free wired Ethernet internet in their sleeping rooms (you might snag a wifi signal from outside, but we can't guarantee it). However, please be aware that when you log on to the net in your room it might appear as if an access fee is being charged! Yikes? No, have no fear the charges will miraculously disappear at check-out - you might have to gently remind the front desk clerk that you are part of the TypeCon group, and to remove the internet fees from your bill.

Droids Programmed to do no Evil
Tuesday, July 1 5:22 pm by Simon Daniels
What can you tell about a phone from its font? It’s interesting to contrast Nokia, with its religious devotion to Nokia Sans, with Apple, and the iPhone’s Helvetica and supporting cast of Microsoft and Monotype fonts, with Windows Mobile and its move from Matthew Carters Nina to a more traditional humanist sans. All of these choices seem somewhat predictable, somewhat conservative, and somewhat boring. With this in mind there was quite a stir on the blogs when Google said that the Android phone platform would boast its own set of custom fonts, known as the Droid family of fonts.

Spiekermann Returns…
Tuesday, July 1 10:52 am by Simon Daniels
2008 marks the welcome return of self-described typomaniac Professor Erik Spiekermann to both TypeCon and ATypI. Those of us that didn’t make it to TypoBerlin have had to visit his occasionally updated blog, or put the Helvetica movie on repeat to get our weekly fix of “Spiekerwisdom.” The official TypeCon schedule reveals little, promising no more than “typographic tales,” but after what seems like several years in the wilderness, I for one can’t wait to hear what revelations he has for the typo-faithful.

Keeping TypeCon a Wardrobe Malfunction Free Zone
Wednesday, June 25 1:27 pm by Simon Daniels
Type designers and font folks generally come in two modes. There are the well dressed dapper dons generally from Europe or the East Coast who totally look the part – prime examples being Roger Black, Erik Spiekermann, Nadine Chahine, and Jay Rutherford. At the other extreme there are the jeans and T-shirt brigade, generally hailing from the Midwest and West Coast – see exhibits A, B, and C. Whichever end of the typographic spectrum you’ll need to put in some effort. Dragging out that tired KERN zip-up or last year’s T-shirt will win you no friends. The key is to make an effort, keep it real, but don’t go too far... unlike these guys, pictured during TypeCon Seattle and New York.
Web Fonts Panel Update
Wednesday, June 25 10:26 am by Simon Daniels
We’re pleased to report that Erik van Blokland has agreed to join the TypeCon Web Fonts panel discussion scheduled for the morning of Sunday July 20. Erik and longtime LettError collaborator Just van Rossum were amongst the first type designers to highlight the dangers of “embedded fonts”, especially with respect to the web. The concerns they expressed in the mid-90’s now appear to have been realized in browser support for downloadable fonts, so it will be interesting and revealing to get Erik’s thoughts on what got us to this point and where we go from here.

Web Fonts Episode IV, A New Hope?
Tuesday, June 24 9:43 am by Simon Daniels
Join us Sunday morning for the latest round of lively, charged debate around the thorny issue of fonts on the web. During a panel discussion at TypeCon Boston the community raised concerns around calls for browsers to start supporting raw font downloads. The “Web Fonts” scheme calls for fonts to be posted on web servers, downloaded and temporarily installed by browsers in order to render web pages. Earlier this year Apple’s Safari browser became the first to support the system.

I love the smell of Cheerios in the morning. It smells like... Buffalo!
Sunday, June 1 1:25 am by Tamye Riggs
By Richard Kegler
The aroma wafting from the General Mills factory in Buffalo is unlike any urban odor you would expect from a post-industrial Rust Belt city. The steel mills are now closed, but General Mills still cranks out toasty goodness (alternating between Cheerios and Cocoa Puffs) that can be detected from miles away. This is but one of the pleasant surprises to be found in Buffalo, New York.

TypeCon.com: New and Improved
Monday, May 5 8:14 pm by Shu Lai
Well, it is a bit late, but as promised here is the unveiling of the brand new, built from scratch, TypeCon.com. We went all out on this one and there are going to be a few bumps in the road. This new system (we hope) will allow us to serve up rich content easily. It has a much more flexible system which in the future will allow us to get the site up much earlier in the coming years. At the same time, TypeCon.com will slowly become more of a destination on the 'off season' of TypeCon. Big thanks to Brian Crick and Wes Wong for their amazing skills.
Play around and let us know what you think of the new structure, the UI and the slick new tools. We will be rolling out updated designs and new features and feedback is welcome! Let us know at webmaster@typecon.com
