Keynote Presentation: Adrian Shaughnessy

The Adobe Type team — in association with SOTA — is pleased to be presenting designer, writer, and publisher Adrian Shaughnessy as this year’s keynote speaker. The keynote presentation will take place the evening of Thursday, August 22rd, 2013 at the Hilton Portland & Executive Tower.

From album covers to book publishing.

A talk about a journey from a designer of album covers to a publisher and creator of design books. In addition, the presentation will look in depth at three typography books published by Unit Editions, highlighting how typography is best displayed in book form, and analysing the work contained in the three books: Herb Lubalin: American Typographer (1918-81); Juriaan Schrofer: Restless Typographer (1926-90); and Type Only – a radical compendium of new thinking in type.

About the speaker

Adrian Shaughnessy is a graphic designer, writer, educator and publisher based in London. In 1988 he co-founded the design company Intro. The company won numerous awards for its groundbreaking music packaging. In 2003 he left studio life to work as an independent design and editorial consultant. He is a founding partner in Unit Editions, a publishing company producing books on design and visual culture.Shaughnessy has written and art directed numerous books on design including How to be a Graphic Designer Without Losing Your Soul, which has sold over 80,000 copies to date. He has written and art directed books on Total Design, Ken Garland, and Herb Lubalin. His latest book is Scratching the Surface — a collection of essays and journalism on design. He writes regularly for Eye, Design Observer, and Creative Review and is a contributor to avant-garde music magazine The Wire.Shaughnessy has been interviewed frequently on television and radio. He lectures extensively around the world, and hosts a radio show called Graphic Design on the Radio on Resonance FM. He is a Senior Tutor in Graphic Design at the Royal College of Art, London, and a member of AGI.
