TypeCon2014 Education Forum Call for Speakers

The Society of Typographic Aficionados (SOTA) is pleased to announce that it will present its ninth Type & Design Education Forum as part of TypeCon2014. This special program will be held on Thursday, July 31st, 2014 at the Hyatt Regency Washington in Washington, DC.The theme of this year’s Type & Design Education Forum is:

Keeping It Real: Learning from Trial & Error

The act or process of creating is often overlooked in the glory of the resulting outcome, but it is the process that can best describe how creativity is achieved. The creative process of teaching is a trial and error operation. Multiple directions may be followed until success is finally at hand; the path is not necessarily a smooth process. However, failures weed out weaker outcomes. They make your belief in the resulting solution stronger. Mistakes and missteps can be a healthy part of learning for teachers as well as students.

  • How do you create an environment that fosters learning from mistakes?
  • How have you tweaked an assignment or course curriculum to be more beneficial?
  • What role has trial and error played in your teaching successes?

SOTA invites you to share an assignment process, curriculum design, or teaching methodology — unusual, mistake-ridden, or polished — to illuminate our understanding of teaching typography. Please indicate if you would like a 20- or 30-minute speaking slot in your brief. If you feel your presentation can be an effective 40-minute keynote address for the Type & Design Education Forum, please indicate this in your proposal.Submit your proposal using our online form.Deadline for proposals: Saturday, March 15th, 2014The programming committee will make its selections and inform all applicants no later than April 15th, 2014.
