Michael C. PlaceEach year, the Society of Typographic Aficionados works closely with a designer or team to develop the conference identity. With this year’s conference being held in Washington, DC, we are extremely pleased to be partnering with Michael C. Place on the TypeCon2014 theme — Capitolized.

About Michael C. Place

Michael studied graphic design at Newcastle College from 1988–1990. He makes no secret of the fact that he left before graduating, in order to follow his dream of designing record sleeves. After gaining experience at various studios in London, Michael joined the influential graphics studio The Designers Republic in Sheffield, where he worked for 9 years.While at TDR, Michael produced some of the studio’s best-known, seminal, and iconic works — many of which have since earned a place in cultural history.In 2000, Michael took a break from the design world to embark on a 10-month world trip. In 2001, he returned to found design consultancy Build, where he is currently creative director.Michael features in Gary Hustwit’s acclaimed 2007 documentary film Helvetica and designed the packaging and collateral for each film in Gary’s Design Film Trilogy. He has spoken at numerous conferences worldwide and has several times been a judge at the prestigious D&AD global awards. Build’s work has been published globally and both Michael and the studio have shown work at exhibitions in the UK and abroad, including Tokyo, New York, Paris and London.
