Nicholas Felton Designing TypeCon2015 Identity

Each year, the Society of Typographic Aficionados works closely with a designer or team to develop an identity that uniquely reflects the conference theme and location. With the conference making its way to Denver this summer, we are extremely pleased to be partnering with the talented Nicholas Felton on the theme for TypeCon2015 — Condensed.
 

“I like hard problems, so when SOTA asked if I would like to design an identity for the world’s best type designers it was a no-brainer.Typically I let data dictate the forms and composition of my work, but for this assignment I decided to rely more on algorithms and less on databases … more on chance and wildness than order and predictability. I began my exploration in code, aspiring to find a system that would allow me to select and edit rather than draw and move letters individually.The result is a drawing application that explores the condensed concept and abstracts the traditions of sketched and filigree letterforms. The development of this program has brought me for the first time into the world of generative typography and expanded my notions of what constitutes drawing, type design and an identity system.”

Nicholas Felton is a designer, entrepreneur, and artist concerned with translating quotidian data into meaningful objects and experiences. He is the author of numerous personal Annual Reports that condense the events of a year into a tapestry of maps, graphs, and statistics. The insights and techniques developed from his Annual Reports have informed his design of Facebook’s Timeline and the creation of the Reporter and Daytum applications.
