Nicholas Felton Designing TypeCon2015 Identity
Each year, the Society of Typographic Aficionados works closely with a designer or team to develop an identity that uniquely reflects the conference theme and location. With the conference making its way to Denver this summer, we are extremely pleased to be partnering with the talented Nicholas Felton on the theme for TypeCon2015 — Condensed.
“I like hard problems, so when SOTA asked if I would like to design an identity for the world’s best type designers it was a no-brainer.Typically I let data dictate the forms and composition of my work, but for this assignment I decided to rely more on algorithms and less on databases … more on chance and wildness than order and predictability. I began my exploration in code, aspiring to find a system that would allow me to select and edit rather than draw and move letters individually. The result is a drawing application that explores the condensed concept and abstracts the traditions of sketched and filigree letterforms. The development of this program has brought me for the first time into the world of generative typography and expanded my notions of what constitutes drawing, type design and an identity system.”
