TypeCon2011 Education Forum Call for Speakers
Update! The deadline for submissions has been extended to April 8th, 2011
The Society of Typographic Aficionados (SOTA) will present its sixth Type & Design Education Forum as part of TypeCon2011. This special program will be held on Thursday, July 7, 2011 at the Royal Sonesta Hotel in New Orleans. We are currently seeking presenters and facilitators in a number of categories related to type and design education.
2011 Education Forum Theme
This year the forum will be devoted to addressing issues faced by type educators teaching a generation of students who have spent their entire lives interacting with digital devices.
According to Marc Prensky:
It is now clear that as a result of this ubiquitous environment and the sheer volume of their interaction with it, today’s students think and process information fundamentally differently from their predecessors. Digital Natives are used to receiving information really fast. They like to parallel process and multi-task. They prefer their graphics before their text, rather than the opposite. They prefer random access (like hypertext). They function best, when networked. They thrive on instant gratification and frequent rewards. They prefer games to “serious” work.
Do you consider yourself a digital native or a digital immigrant? Have you developed special strategies to communicate with your digital native students? How should this shift in how students think, how they receive, and how they process information affect curriculum structure? We invite all interested parties, who have insights into this issue, to submit proposals for presentations.
