TypeCon needs you!

The Society of Typographic Aficionados is now accepting programming proposals for TypeCon2021 — our first virtual conference — taking place October 21st to 24th.TypeCon covers a broad range of topics, including typography, type design, font production, graphic design, digital media, printing history, calligraphy, lettering, book arts, advertising, wayfinding, type in motion, literacy, type sales and marketing, legal issues, design education, and other related areas.We are currently seeking proposals for presentations. All presentations will be pre-recorded. Q & As will be held live as a panel after each group of presentations.

You!TypeCon is a submissions-driven conference. Our program is enriched by the innovation, interest, and intellect you bring to it. Have something to share? Submit a proposal! What do you get out of it?

If your proposal is accepted, you’ll receive a free full conference registration. Discounted passes are available for spouses, partners, and guests.

What should I talk about?

TypeCon offers three programming options: 20-minute Main Program presentations, 10- and 20-minute Education Forum presentations. Have lots of ideas? We’re all ears: there’s no limit to the number of proposals you may submit. Tell us what’s on your mind!Main ProgramBecause the conference is virtual, Main Conference presentations are limited to 20 minutes for the comfort of both the audience and the speakers. Q & A will be held live as a panel after each group of presentations.Previous presentation topics have explored a wide range of topics including medieval blackletter calligraphy, font marketing, and non-Latin writing systems. We look for subject matter that will be appealing to typographers, designers, lettering artists, calligraphers, printmakers, educators, students and other “letterheads” who will be attending the conference. If you’re passionate about a topic, chances are TypeCon attendees will be too.Education ForumThe Type & Design Education Forum, produced for educators by educators, will take place on Saturday, October 23rd. This Forum provides a unique opportunity to share and learn from fellow colleagues in a more intimate setting prior to the main conference program. Find inspiration, network, and discover new friends. Presentations are prerecorded and limited to 10 and 20 minutes. Q & A will be held live as a panel after each group of presentations.This year, we are welcoming Education Forum proposals in the following areas:Curriculum_ Innovative teaching of typography and designNew normal_ Remote/hybrid teaching successes, lessons learned, and silver liningsThesis_ Thesis projects by recent graduate students (the process undertaken to acquire a thesis topic as well as the method of development of the thesis)

Okay, okay! How do I submit my ideas?

First, be sure to review our Submissions Guide. Then, be prepared to provide the following information as part of your proposal:Basic information: Name, affiliation, title, email, phone, social media.Bio: A brief biography for publication, 800 characters or less.View an example speaker bioPhoto: Headshot image, 1200×1200 pixels, black & white preferred.Abstract: Summary for publication, 1,200 characters or less.View examples of previous year’s presentation abstractsYou may also need to provide the following information, in certain situations:Co-presenter: If you have a co-presenter, the above information is required for that person as well.Education Forum: In addition to the above information, a CV and a minimum of 6 supporting images are required.If selected, your abstract and bio will appear on the TypeCon website. How are proposals selected?

All proposals are evaluated and scored using a blind selection process by members of the SOTA board as well as independent, non-affiliated individuals. For more detailed information, see the Submissions Guide.

When will I find out if my proposal was accepted?

Applicants can expect to be notified via email in mid-July.

When is my presentation due?

If your proposal is accepted, your pre-recorded presentation is due by 11:59 PM Eastern Standard Time on Monday, August 16th. Presentations will be reviewed for quality, and SOTA reserves the right to reject any subpar submissions.
