Hangeul and Kana Card Games

WHEN: July 25, 2024
WHERE: Revolution Hall
TIME: 8:30am – 11:30am
LEADERS: Alice J Lee, Neil Summerour

Description:
Learning a new language opens up a whole new world and culture, and alphabets and syllabaries are accessible writing systems that connect the sounds of the language to a visual symbol, making the learning of a new language easier. In this workshop, we will learn about the Korean alphabet and the Japanese hiragana and katakana syllabaries. To emphasize the visual representation of sound, we will design letterforms of fun examples of onomatopoeia. Onomatopoeia is a word formed based on a sound associated with what is named. For example “sizzle,” “woof,” and “bam.” Empowered with new language and cultural knowledge, we will design and print a set of playing cards (drinking game!) and enjoy Japanese and Korean adult beverages and snacks.
